Dear Grandfathers:

I wish that I had known you. At least one of you. I don’t know what it is like to have a family that is whole.

It’s silly to think that way, because I have uncles and aunts and cousins to whom I’m closer than most people, and my network of extended family overwhelmingly huge. I had two incredibly strong grandmothers who did so much alone, who created my parents.

I wonder what it would have been like to know either of you. I wonder what stories you would have told me. I wonder who I would be.
