earth: change

The planet shifts,
twitches, shakes,
bursts, spews,
collapses on
itself.

It always has.

Fire and rain
fell from the
heavens

before we
came to
name them.

Before they
were called
disasters,

they were just
natural.

If the planet
could name us

if the forests,
the plains,
the gophers,
the elephants,
the tigers,
the whales,
the salmon,
the sparrows
could name us

(maybe they do,
in their own
languages)

perhaps they
would call us
disaster,

say that we
have a wholly
unnatural

propensity
to forget
that we

to change it
in ways
irrevocable

to change it
without thinking
enough
even of our
own species’
survival
let alone
theirs.

The planet shifts,
twitches, shakes,
bursts, spews,
collapses on
itself.

It always has.

It has always
had to.

What excuse
do we have?
