earth: life, 3

Before there was
pavement
there was gravel

Before the manicured
lawns, there were
pebbles, dirt, wild grass

We spend so much time
making sure that the life
that was there first
doesn’t come back.

The sound of lawnmowers and
leaf-blowers drown out
the morning’s birdsong.

We like to keep
our sidewalks clean

while

the birds are there
singing through the smog,

the moss is there
growing over the concrete.

Let us remember
to leave–
to make–
room for them.
