earth: life, 4

Let us teach children
the pleasure of dirt
beneath their fingernails,

show them that grass
may make their skin itch
but that it holds earth together
when the storms come

the trees don’t ask
for much more than
some sunlight, some rain,

and not to be cut down.

Let us teach children
gratitude for the trees felled,
the acres cleared, the creatures
killed on our behalf,

and know that yes,
we have taken, yes,
we will continue to take

but that we shall not take
without thanks, without
treasuring the gift, without
offering something in return.

Let there be a shift
in our thinking.

We are not masters of this
universe, however great
our technology

We are guests on this
planet– let us
teach children to be
mindful of its hospitality.
