it’s not the end of the world

there is no armageddon
waiting to engulf us all in flames
no rapture waiting to
punish nonbelievers

we will not be so lucky

we are already
smothering ourselves slowly
under smog, plastic, pesticides, pavement

our cities grow like cancers,
filling with refugees from
the far away landscapes
destroyed by our hunger
for minerals, oil, cattle

we are dazzled blind
by our technology,
by our material plenty

we have become adept
at stealing from the future
under the guise of creating it.
