of cities

There’s no shame
in not loving
the underdog;
that’s why
she’s the underdog,
after all

because she is different
snarls at you funny
barks too much
doesn’t always smell nice

Not all dogs
are loved by all;

do not begrudge us
the ferocity of our love
for a strange,
gangly-limbed,
sometimes ridiculous
city

no one is asking
you to love her, too
and you have plenty of
company in your disdain

do not be surprised
that we gather up close
to those who share
our tenderness
toward this mangy
beast which to us
is gorgeous.
