this pain called convenience, 1

from if not for this (2018). upon recent news of the record-setting wildfire in the Amazon.

I miss the days
when Amazon
did not refer
to a deluge of deals
delivered to your door

whose expense
is hard to quantify
and easy to consume

somewhere else–
its harm falls
somewhere
imperceptible

we in the north
see its namesake
as elsewhere

another hemisphere
which may as well
be another planet

our daily actions
slowly (ever more quickly)
asphyxiating
the lungs of the world

you are not what you buy

are you?

or are you?

you are
what you
abide
